Fair housing: A right for over 50 years

What is fair housing? When you purchase or rent a home anywhere in the United States, you are legally entitled to fair treatment. No person or corporation can treat you unequally when looking for a home. They cannot discriminate based on race, color, country of origin, religion, sex, family status, sexuality or disability.

Black History Month is an ideal time to both celebrate and defend this right, which is closely tied to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and the legacy of Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Fair Housing Act

The Fair Housing Act, Title Eight of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, passed in Congress in the immediate wake of Doctor King’s assassination, enshrining in law his efforts to ensure equitable housing access for all people.
